Feb 10 – Apr 15: J. M. W. Turner: Watercolors to Books. British landscape painter Joseph Mallord William Turner broke new artistic ground with breathtaking watercolors reproduced as etchings to illustrate travel books, poetry, and novels. Through Feb 11: DEAD ACCOUNTS. At first, prodigal son Jack’s unexpected visit to Cincinnati from New York City appears to be an exercise in the mass consumption of comfort foods from his youth — Graeter’s, Skyline and LaRosa’s. Through Feb 11: Playhouse Off the Hill Series Continues with War. A powerful play that follows four young men struggling with the pressures of competition, anger and vulnerability — will tour to 12 community arts centers throughout the region. In the play, boys use war as a metaphor for their lives — in the street, in school, in sports and in their relationships. The playwright uses invented language to stand in for harsh slang, creating a poetic and highly theatrical experience. Through Feb 12: The Whipping Man. It’s Passover, 1865. The Civil War has just ended and the annual celebration of freedom from bondage is being observed in Jewish homes across the country. Caleb DeLeon, a Jewish Confederate soldier, returns wounded from the battlefield to find his family home in ruins, abandoned by everyone except Simon and John, two former slaves, who were raised as Jews in the DeLeon home. As the three men wait for the family's return, they wrestle with their shared past as master and slave, uncovering a tangle of long-buried family secrets as well as new ones...ties that bind them together and that, ultimately, might cost each man his freedom. Through Feb 19: Caine Mutiny Court Martial. A young lieutenant has relieved his captain of command in the midst of a typhoon on the grounds that the captain, Queeg, is a psychopath in crisis and would have sent the ship and its crew to their destruction. Through Mar 3: Collapse. In 2007, the Mississippi River Bridge in Minneapolis collapsed, killing 13 people and injuring another 145. Hannah's husband David was driving one of the cars that went off the bridge. He's suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, but refuses to attend a support group. Hannah's life is falling apart. She can't get pregnant, she's one step away from losing her job, and she thinks her husband, who hasn't been to work for months, may be an alcoholic. All he does is sit around the house, watering the plants with beer. When her sister, Susan arrives from California for an open-ended stay Hannah seems ready to unravel for good. Through Apr 29: Impressions and Improvisations: The Prints of Romare Bearden. A twentieth-century master of collage and printmaking, Romare Bearden (1911–1988) was also arguably that century’s most influential African American artist. Thoroughly acquainted with abstract modern art, Bearden chose to retain recognizable compositions for his preferred subjects: rural life in North Carolina, urban New York, Caribbean scenes, jazz culture, modern family life, and biblical and mythological tales. Through Apr 29: Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth. Nick Cave’s Soundsuits are mixed-media, semi-human forms that are named for the sounds they make when they are worn. Cave constructs many of the from cast-off materials, incorporating sequined and embroidered fabrics, crocheted hot pads, buttons, ceramic knick-knacks, and metal toys scavenged from thrift stores. Others are made of human hair dyed in neon colors and bold patterns. They are both static sculptures when shown in a gallery and kinetic when worn on the human body. Through May 26: Courage: The Vision to End Segregation, The Guts to Fight For It. Courage tells a powerful grass-roots "people story" behind the Supreme Court's landmark Civil Rights decision Brown v. Board of Education. The exhibit traces the saga of Rev. J.A. De Laine and the brave citizens of Clarendon County, S.C. who brought the first lawsuit challenging racial segregation in public schools. Mar 10: Cincinnati Black Theater Company presents Black Angels Over Tuskegee. The story of the Tuskegee Airmen told in narrative of six men embarking upon a journey to become pilots in the United States Army Air Forces. The play explores their collective struggle with Jim Crow, their intelligence, patriotism, dreams of an inclusive fair society, and brotherhood. The play goes beyond the headlines of the popular stories of the Tuskegee Airmen and exposes the men who exhibited the courage to excel, in spite of all the overwhelming odds against them.
