Kearney proposes bill for safe school routes

Senator Eric H. Kearney (D-Cincinnati) has introduced Senate Bill 293, addressing the transportation safety of Ohio’s children. Every school year bus drivers are faced with the arduous task of transporting children to and from school safely. They must maneuver through traffic and, like all drivers, be mindful of pedestrians and bikers.

“The welfare of our children is placed in the hands of school bus drivers and we must take precautionary measures to ensure their safe travels,” Kearney said. The bill would require the Department of Transportation to survey each school district, community school, and STEM school regarding transportation options for students living within two miles of a school. Kearney explains, “As a father and senator concerned for the welfare of Ohio’s children, this legislation furthers my commitment to increasing the safety of the youth while in transport.” The bill is in concordance with his amendment to House Bill 320 requiring the use of booster seats for children up to age eight. Kearney’s safe routes to school legislation will ensure that children in grades K-8 enjoy safe travels when riding in state operated vehicles.
