Opera tenor Lawrence Brownlee makes May Festival debut May 28 in ‘Elijah’
Lawrence Brownlee Tenor Lawrence Brownlee, who is no stranger to Cincinnati audiences, will make his debut at May Festival on May 28 in “Elijah.” His operatic reputation has flourished, and he continues to perform at preeminent opera houses nationally and internationally. Engagements at the Palais Garnier in Paris, Opéra de Lausanne, and the Metropolitan Opera, where he appeared opposite Renée Fleming once again, have occupied his schedule this season alone. In April, he looks forward to his debut with the Canadian Opera Company in La Cenerentola, and later appearances at La Scala, in his calling card role as Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia. It is a role that will also mark his debut at the Arena di Verona in July.
A superb concert singer, flawless in technique and sublimely expressive, Larry has performed on many notable recital series. Last year found him making his debut with the Rosenblatt Recitals in London, as well as the Harriman-Jewell Series in Kansas City, MO. Furthermore, Cincinnati music lovers have heard him in concert on several occasions, most recently Carmina Burana with Paavo Järvi in January of 2010.
As a recording artist, 2010 and 2011 have been impressive years for Larry. The tenor continued his exploration of Rossini’s repertoire, recording the composer’s Stabat Mater and L’Italiana in Algeri. The Stabat Mater, released by EMI, under the direction of Antonio Pappano, has been highly touted having been named “CD of the Month” by both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine. Moreover, Naxos’ L’Italiana in Algeri was cited as one of the “Best of the Year” by Opera News.
In the midst of such accolades, Larry continues to retain an affable character and has a grounded sense of self. A passionate sports fan, he sang the National Anthem at a Seattle Sea Hawks play-off game while appearing in that city in January. He enjoys Salsa among many other non-musical activities including photography.
