West Chester resident receives community service award

Dovie D. Majors Dovie D. Majors University of Phoenix, the nation’s largest private university, has announced that it has awarded alumna Dovie D. Majors, MBA, with a Community Service Award for her outstanding work as a mentor and role model to women.

After graduating from its LEAD (leadership, education and development) program in 2004, Majors began volunteering as a mentor with WOMEN Unlimited, Inc., a leadership development organization providing mentoring, education and networking to high-potential women in major corporations.

LEAD is a 12-month leadership skills program which includes workshops, on-thejob assignments, mentoring by leading corporate executives, networking and team-building. The program is for high-potential women with a minimum of seven years of managerial experience. Majors, who also volunteers with Kiwanis, served as a contributor in the book Women Are Changing the Corporate Landscape by WOMEN Unlimited founder Jean Otte.

“University of Phoenix is dedicated to supporting the communities we call home, so it’s an honor to recognize alumna Dovie Majors with our Community Service Award for her commitment to donating her time and energy back to our local area,” said Ryan Hampton, University of Phoenix Cincinnati Campus director. “Dovie demonstrates the passion and drive needed to make a difference through organizations such as WOMEN Unlimited and Kiwanis.”

Majors became familiar with WOMEN Unlimited when she decided to return to college in 2001, for a bachelor’s degree in business management after serving in the U.S. Air Force as an avionics maintenance technician. After an honorable discharge, she went to work for a major tire manufacturer and, at the same time, began examining her educational options.

“University of Phoenix provided exactly what I needed,” said Majors. “The best part was the people I met at the University because it was a nice blend of ages and backgrounds. At the same time, I had a phenomenal experience with WOMEN Unlimited’s LEAD program because I was able to network with other professionals, including executives. It definitely shored up my learning curve, and now I get to pay it forward. ”

Majors said her success comes from recognizing people on her team and choosing to help others around her. “What I learned from WOMEN Unlimited is the importance of building and utilizing networks,” she said.

After completing her bachelor’s degree in 2004, Majors returned to University of Phoenix two years later and earned an MBA in 2008. She now works as Assistant General Manager of Sun- Coke Energy’s Middletown operations where, according to her managers, she is known for “leading teams to extraordinary performance.”

Majors attributes her success to the teams she has led, the leaders who have supported her and her own dedication to promoting and developing others. She is a Six Sigma Green Belt, Lean Sigma certified through Villanova University and Black Belt Certified through Moresteam University. She also is a graduate of four Signature Executive Leadership Programs. For more information about University of Phoenix Cincinnati Campus, call 513-772-9600 or visit www. phoenix.edu/cincinnati.
